Capital punishment is a means of sentencing someone that results in them losing their life because of the crimes they have committed. The practice first started with Captain George Kendall in the Jamestown colony as he was the very first to be executed in the new world in the year 1608. Throughout history there have been various different forms of execution such as lethal injection, electric chair, guillotine, gas chamber, and firing squad. The modern forms we use now tend to be lethal injection and the electric chair. One of the most infamous cases was Coker v. Georgia is one of the most infamous cases where The court was struggling in this case because they were deciding whether or not rape of an adult woman was proportionate to the severity of the punishment. On September 2, 1974, Coker escaped from his prison and went into the Carver's home and kidnapped Mr. Carver's wife and then raped her. Mr. Carver freed himself and then told the police about the incident which they later apprehended and arrested him. Coker was then tried for escape, armed robbery, motor vehicle death, kidnapping, and rape. On top of all of this, The jury ruled that death by electrocution was appropriate since there were already certain aggravating scenarios such as him being in prison already for murder and rape.
