Famous Cases to Mention
Coker v. Georgia (1977)
The court was struggling in this case because they were deciding whether or not rape of an adult woman was proportionate to the severity of the punishment. On September 2, 1974, Coker escaped from his prison and went into the Carver's home and kidnapped Mr. Carver's wife and then raped her. Mr. Carver freed himself and then told the police about the incident which they later apprehended and arrested him. Coker was then tried for escape, armed robbery, motor vehicle death, kidnapping, and rape. On top of all of this, The jury ruled that death by electrocution was appropriate since there were already certain aggravating scenarios such as him being in prison already for murder and rape.
